It’s time for the template of the week. In this week’s installment, we will be discussing what makes a business card truly elegant.
Printing your card on plastic gives it a stand-out appearance, but you still have to decide what that appearance says about you and your company. From week to week, we’ve established that there are a lot of “faces” to choose from. If this is your first business card, or you are simply not sure about how the appearance of your company will change, you can’t go wrong with a monogram-based style.
First Impression under Construction
Many businesses try to make a memorable splash right out of the gate and wind up kicking themselves later for going over-the-top. When it comes to making a first impression, sometimes basic is brilliant; especially if your company branding is still under construction.
It’s easier to grow into a brand than it is to rescue one. Taking the time to develop it correctly is wise, but you still need to network, make connections, and foster business relationships in the meantime. The elegant business card is the perfect way to bridge the construction gap.
If you take a look at the template, you’ll see what we mean. It consists of a simple monogram shadow design on a clear plastic card. Your contact information is at the far right. Don’t be fooled by its simplicity; monograms are a sign of royalty and status. Here’s how most historians say these designation evolved:
It was first used by royalty to stamp their currency. They believed it showed how much they were loved and valued by the people that they ruled. Monograms began permeating the art world because artists needed a way to sign and authenticate their work. By the Victorian Era, socialites were using monograms to signify their place in society. Monograms even came with a rule book.
For instance, did you know that there’s a masculine and feminine presentation for monograms? In the Victorian Era, male monograms were of equal size while female monograms had an over-sized middle initial. To this day, when married couples get monogrammed items, the bride’s initials are on the left side; the groom’s initials are on the right.
While many of the rules we used to abide by are gone; monograms still carry a certain air about them.
