A few weeks ago, we showcased an incredible 2003 TED talk from marketing tastemaker Seth Godin. We received such a positive response about his “ideas worth spreading,” we decided to go back into the TED archive to find this more recent talk from 2009. In talking about “The Tribes We Lead”, Godin piles on examples of the evolution of marketing. At first, products just needed to be made and distributed in order to be popular. Then, mass marketing was all that products and ideas required to be successful. However, we now live in a digital age where those methods don’t quite have the same punch, if any at all.

Seth Godin goes back to the essential idea of tribes to talk about how appealing to groups that are passionate and persuasive about what they love is the best way to get your ideas to become beloved and popular. If you appeal and stoke the passion of the best group of people for your product, they’ll turn around and inspire those around them. It’s goes beyond defining which concepts are worth spreading, and turns the discussion into talking about how to bring those great ideas to the right people. It’s fun, it’s informative, and it’s essential viewing.
