What good is a business card if it's not going to stay in people's hands? If they take your card and a day later throw it in the trash, lose it somewhere in their purse, or better yet wash it in their laundry, how does that help you and your business grow?
The answer to this question is, it doesn't at all... and the .20 cents you spent on that flimsy piece of paper is now useless to you and your company. Make sure that those cards stay in the hands of the people who take them! How do you do that? Well, you've got to make an absolutely phenomenal, awe-inspiring business card that no other company has. Make it useful to them (a calendar card, perhaps?) or something that is fun for them to use (mustache business cards, anyone?).
As Nancy Loverling on Small Business Chron points out, there are many ways for you to make your card go above and beyond with little to no effort! A few pointers she has are:
- Less is More: Let your card breathe a little bit. You don't have to cover every bit of retail. Some free space on your card can also serve as a place to write notes or extra information. (Think you can't write on plastic business cards? Think again!)
- Texture: A little bit of texture can go a long way. Think about what your company is all about and maybe you can include some sort of tie-in with your business. For example if you are a music shop, give your card a LP record texture. If you're a funky boutique that sells apparel, maybe try some leopard print. Just make sure that it is subtle enough so that it doesn't detract the card holder from the important information, your business.
- Make it Functionable: I dipped into this a bit earlier, but if you can create a function for your card other than just holding your business information it will turn your card into MORE than just a business card and people are much more likely to hold onto it!
