As of today, Halloween is one month away. I don't know about you, but my family relishes the chance to celebrate this ghoulish start to the holiday season. My brother even builds and runs his own haunted house. Over the years, we've all played our roles as semi-professional frighteners.

Local Haunts & Halloween Hotspots
If you didn't know it already, Minnesota has a rich haunted history. From the state’s rich and famous benefactors to its prohibition ties; the ghosts are as much a part of our past history, as they are a piece of our present reality. To give you an idea of what that looks like, we've collected some of the favorite active hotspots from around the state.
Haunted House #1: Grigg’s Mansion. Locally known as “the most haunted house in St. Paul;” this four-story mansion is home to at least seven apparitions.
Originally built in 1883, this Victorian era sandstone structure evolved from a family home to an art school and is now a privately owned piece of Summit Avenue history. The transitions don't seem to have bothered the non-human residents. In fact, the changes have only added to the cast of spirits that occupy the house. From a young boy to an art student to the original owner himself; locals have encountered numerous strange happenings and appearances through the decades.
By all indications, the house is still haunted today, but I reiterate, it is privately owned. The current owners would like local residents and ghost hunters to respect their property and privacy.
Haunted House #2: Fitzgerald Theater. Also located in St. Paul, this iconic theater was built in 1910, but it wasn't until the building went under renovation in 1985 that a different kind of theater enthusiast chose to make himself known.
When a false ceiling was removed revealing a hidden second balcony, an apparition began appearing in different locations around the theater. The apparition is affectionately referred to as Ben. He likes to roam the balcony and catwalk area, play tricks on staff members, and move things to odd, out of place locations around the building.
Perhaps, most intriguingly, he is not alone. The staff has also heard the distinct voice of a female singing throughout the theater. They have named this apparition Veronica. If you show up at the right time of day, you might just hear her practicing.
It is unclear how these two apparitions came to call the Fitzgerald home, but they still haunt the theater today. While they have been accepted as unseen residents; theater staff would be willing to negotiate an apparition trade with another local theater, if only it were possible.
Haunted House #3: Wabasha Street Caves. If mob history is your cup of tea, these caves are the place to be. They have had many uses over time, but their most famous residents include Jon Dillinger and the contemporaries of his day. In the 1930s, these caves doubled as a local speakeasy. While most of the activity here was social; there is at least one murder on the books.
Supposedly, a hit was carried out against three gangsters in the Fireside Room. To this day, those gangsters and several other party-goers and cohorts haunt the caves and relish in the daily goings on that take place here.
Haunted House #4: The Haunted Basement. If manufactured horror is more your thing, you can try to get tickets to the Soap Factory Haunted Basement. Every year, starting October 3 and going through early November, more than 200 frighteners, artists, and set designers come together to scare as many willing participants as they can.
The theme for each year's hunting is kept under lock and key, but it is interactive and it can get messy. For many Minnesotans, this haunted house has become a tradition. If you want to make it one of yours, purchase your tickets as early as possible. They go on sale in August and sellout quickly.
To give you a taste of what to expect, here's what last year's director had to say, “People come here and pay money to play a role. They play the role of the victim; we play the role of the torturer. We will push that line as far as we can, without going over it. In what other world do you get to do that?”
This may go without saying, but if you plan to visit any of these haunted houses, proceed at your own risk.
